“ NOT FOR SALE

Formally trained in photography from the age of fifteen, Kopenhaver has expanded her artistic practice into video, performance, and installation.

Her most recent project, NOT FOR SALE, is for anyone who has ever felt commodified. It’s for all the individuals affected directly or indirectly by traumas, it’s for the people who want to express boundaries, ditch the guidelines, speak up, challenge power and authority, it’s for the people who reject the pretty pictures and build their own path. You’re a human, and you aren’t for sale.

"We live in a culture, in America, that promotes a desire for satisfaction, an endless appetite ... we are affected by messages on how to act, say, dress, be."

Katelyn Kopenhaver: Artist

Katelyn Kopenhaver is a photographer and multimedia artist originally from Doylestown, Pennsylvania. She received her BFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts in 2016 and currently works and resides in New York City. Her works have been exhibited and published frequently in New York, Los Angeles and London. Formally trained in photography from the age of fifteen, Kopenhaver has expanded her artistic practice into video, performance, and installation. Kopenhaver is preoccupied with societal oversight, those crucial moments that are seen but forgotten, the glimpse of an act between two people that alarms us, an instant where we ask ourselves “should I intervene?”

Pulling from my daily experience of having “sexy” whispered in my ear while walking, . . . to not so obvious transactional relationships I became wary. In addition to the atrocious world of sex trafficking, missing girls and abduction, my deep-seated rage and fear of being bought and sold made way to the forefront of my consciousness. We live in a culture, in America, that promotes a desire for satisfaction, an endless appetite. We are affected by messages on how to act, say, dress, be. NOT FOR SALE, is for anyone who has ever felt commodified. It’s for all the individuals affected directly or indirectly by traumas, it’s for the people who want to express boundaries, ditch the guidelines, speak up, challenge power and authority, it’s for the ones who reject the pretty pictures and build their own path. You’re a human, and you aren’t for sale.

Katelyn often collaborates with Pen + Brush, a 125-year-old publicly supported not-for-profit fighting for gender equity in the arts. P+B provides a platform to showcase the work of female artists and writers to a broader audience with the ultimate goal of effecting real change within the marketplace. 75% of all sales go directly to the artist and 25% comes back in to feed the organization’s work.
